A note from Whole30 co-founder and CEO Melissa Urban

I co-founded the Whole30 in 2009 with the vision that everyone in the world who wants to do a Whole30 should be able to do so. Since then, I’ve come to understand that the Whole30 can’t just be freely available to people with diverse identities; it must be built with them in mind. As such, we have been deeply invested in diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, in the hope that everyone in the Whole30 community feels welcomed, seen, and represented through our efforts.

In 2016, I published The Whole30 Cookbook, inspiring hundreds of thousands of people to discover how simple, delicious, and satisfying Whole30 meals can be. When I was writing that book, however, I had little understanding of concepts like cultural appropriation or representation. As a result, our recipe titles and descriptions did not always do justice to the cultures from which these foods or ingredients originated, and the contributors featured did not accurately represent our larger community.

I spent most of 2020 revising The Whole30 Cookbook to make it reflective of our deep cultural appreciation of food, reviewing and revising the book page by page. We added ten delicious recipes from five talented contributors, showcasing their unique cultures. And we reformatted the book as a paperback, to make it more cost-accessible. When we were done, the cookbook was reborn under a new title: Cooking Whole30.

I hope you feel heard, and seen, and welcomed, and represented through this new text.
