Udzungwa Forest tent camp is on the limit of the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, Southern Tanzania.
These forested mountains are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains known as’Galagos of AfricaDue to their high endemism, they cover less than 2% of the land area, but comprise more than 50% of the country’s plant and animal species. Over 300 endemic animals and over 800 endemic plants have been found in the east arch.
The Udzung were one of the most remarkable biodiversity hotspots in Africa, and exploring them is an unforgettable experience. The habitats included in the national park include tropical rainforest, mountain forest, miombo forest, grassland, and steppe.
Animals found in the Udzungwa Mountains National Park
The Udzungwa Mountains are a primate hotspot with five Tanzanian endemics.
- the newly discovered Highland Mangeby (found in the Ndundulu Forest),
- the Sanje Crested Mangeby,
- the Iringa Red Colobus,
- the Matundu dwarf Galago and
- the mountain dwarf Galago.
Other primates include the Vervet monkey, the Sykes monkey, the black and white colobus, the yellow baboon, Grant’s galago, the small-eared galago, and the large galago.
Other mammal species are led by the recently rediscovered Lowes Servaline Genetthat was first photographed in the Udzungwa Mountains National Park. It was previously seen about 70 years ago and the evidence was limited to a single skin.
Other mammal species that can be found in the Udzungwa Mountains are: Elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, bushbuck, sable, greater kudu, Harvey’s red duiker, bush duiker, palm civets, miombo genes, hyena, sun squirrel, climbing mice, spiny mouse, opossum, shrew, shrew and hippopotamus.
The Udzungwa Mountains National Park is one of the Top Ten Areas for Bird Conservation in Africa (IBA) with over 250 species of birds. The Udzungwa Mountains are also home several Tanzanian endemic birds including Rufous Winged Sunbird and the Udzungwa Partridge.
Udzungwa Mountains National Park is also home to a large and diverse range of endemic butterflies, amphibians, and reptiles, including the pygmy bearded chameleon.
